U.S. military rolls out VoIP system at training facility

You would be hard pressed to find an organization that relies on proper communication more heavily than the United States military. It is interesting, then, to see that the U.S. Army has just awarded a $14.4 million contract to a U.S. technology firm to deploy a VoIP phone system at the Fort Leonard Wood site in Missouri.

UPI.com profiled the instillation of the new technology which will be replacing the ageing system currently in place. The new communication solution will consist of a distributed network of gateways with analog, digital and IP-based communication devices.

"This is a great opportunity to help modernize this important military installation," Kevin Kelly, the CEO of the tech company that was awarded the contract, told the news source. "By modernizing to a digital data system, Fort Leonard Wood will be able to take advantage of all of the benefits of greater bandwidth, data speeds and rich media capabilities for its mission."

Fort Leonard Wood is a major training center for the U.S. Department of Defense. Among the tasks that are routinely carried out there are earth moving, civil support, truck driving and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear first responders.

If the U.S. military is rolling out a VoIP communication system, it stands to reason that any business could also reap the benefits of such a solution. Cheaper local and international call pricing and easier maintenance are things that every business can experience.
