Cloud Computing

PRO OnCall can help your organization take advantage of all of the latest technology innovations, including what has come to commonly be called “cloud computing.” Cloud computing – otherwise known as “on demand” or “hosted” computing – is when applications, computations, storage and other IT functions occur outside of end user company facilities and in service provider data centers. The IT functions are accessed by users over the Internet and/or private networks. As such, the actual location of the service providers’ facilities is irrelevant and often not even known by users – hence the phrase “in the cloud.” Cloud computing allows organizations to meet their software, storage, computing and other IT needs by purchasing them as services paid for as they are used, versus as assets paid for with capital. We are the cloud computing experts in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton.

An illustration: In the traditional computing model, a business purchases and servers and locates them in its own data center. The business owns the servers and the software, and pays a staff to operate and maintain it. The computing power of the business is used solely for the business – it isn’t shared with any other entities. This is similar to back when homeowners had to power their own homes with fuel that was on site (wood, candles, etc.) and make the “capital investments” (chopping wood, making candles) to meet their own needs. However, the “utility” model was soon proven much more efficient, where the power “generation” (electricity, natural gas) occurred offsite and homeowner simply consumed what it needed over time. Now, it would be very inefficient for every homeowner to build a power plant to power their own home.

Cloud computing is computing via the same “utility” model. Large amounts of computing, storage, and applications “power” are created by a central “utilities” (IT services providers). This “power” is then transmitted to individual organizations via a “grid” (IT network infrastructure) and used as needed by each user. Users pay only for the services they use and the cost creating these services (hardware, software, etc.) is shared by all of the users and thus much lower than if they had to produce it themselves. With cloud computing, capital investment and maintenance costs are minimized, because the only hardware and software needed on site is typically end point devices (PCs, mobile devices, etc.) and the network connections necessary to connect them to the service providers. The cost of the services themselves is metered based on consumption.

Many people already use cloud computing today. Yahoo mail and Google mail are examples of cloud computing – the emails and data are stored in Yahoo or Google servers around the world and accessed via the Internet. The adoption of cloud computing by organizations will move companies from being IT product centric to IT service centric, and allow them to scale their computing up or down more quickly, while paying only for what computing they use.
